PHILOSOPHY
I believe that ultimately, the client is an expert on who they are. My role as the therapist is to help empower clients to work towards change by unlocking their inner strength and wisdom they hold within.
I offer my clients a safe, open and welcoming space to share their thoughts and feelings without judgment or criticism. I like to think of my office as a type of classroom where clients can learn more about their strengths and growth areas. Just as in teaching, I help clients to understand that there are no mistakes in life, only learning opportunities.
Every individual has his or her own unique therapeutic needs. I try to meet those needs by integrating multiple theories and perspectives into counseling sessions. My therapeutic orientation is a combination between Client-Centered, Family Systems therapy and Cognitive/Dialetical Behavior Therapy.
As a client-centered therapist, I believe that change and healing take place within an empathic and caring relationship between the client and the therapist. This includes the therapist showing unconditional positive regard towards the client no matter what issue or challenges the client brings.
As a systemic therapist, I see clients as part of a larger system that influences how they see themselves and how they socially construct their world view. By looking at a client’s family of origin, family history and current ties to the community, I can best help that client gain insight into where they come from and how that affects who they are today.
I also utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Behahior Therapy for clients who want to change unwanted behaviors or thinking patterns and learn how to improve their communication skills, better regulate emotions and tolerate distress.
